Voices for Children (VFC) and other organizations across the country recognized National Foster Care Month in May, which aims to raise awareness of the challenges faced by children in foster care and acknowledge the dedication of the individuals, families, and communities that support them. More than 10,000 children spend time in the foster care system each year in Riverside and San Diego Counties. Since 1980, VFC has served foster children in San Diego by providing them with Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers. Following training provided by VFC, CASA volunteers are matched with a child or sibling group. CASAs get to know the child, the professionals on their case, and act as advocates for the child’s best interest.

More than 300 children are currently on the VFC waiting list for a CASA. VFC is raising funds to move as many children as possible off the waiting list and under the care of a CASA volunteer. There are two primary ways to get involved with this effort: sign up to become a CASA volunteer or donate to VFC’s spring campaign. For more information visit www.speakupnow.org.
