Local Women Honored with Special Soroptimist Award
Live Your Dreams
Six local women were recently honored at Soroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland’s annual Soroptimist Women’s Award Gala at Shadowridge Golf Club in Vista. Approximately 80 guests, including Vista Mayor Judy Ritter, attended the Hollywood-themed luncheon, which included a ballroom dance demonstration, a raffle, and other activities. The featured event was the presentation of the club’s Live Your Dream Award to three local single mothers who continue to overcome adversities in their lives. “For every negative person in my life who has told me I cannot make it, to quit school, and who has pushed me down, I want to prove them wrong,” one award recipient said. Another recipient, Alisha Donaldson, shared, “My goals in life are to show those who have gone through hardships and struggles, that although times can be very hard, that you can still do anything you set your mind to.” Each of the three awardees received a $5,000 check and award certificate as well as a proclamation from Mayor Ritter. The club’s foundation, a separate entity that was established in 1983, also awarded $5,000 each to graduate nursing students Nicole Galicia and Michelle Glathe, and a $1,500 grant to Rachelle Schull for her graduate work in special education.
The Live Your Dream Award provides women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with the financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training. Recipients can use the award for tuition, books, childcare, or any other education-related expense. Since the program’s inception in 1972, approximately $30 million has helped tens of thousands of women achieve their dreams of a better life for themselves and their families.
